Herb Brewer is a Vietnam War veteran, retired United States Marine Corps First Sergeant, and author whose writing is shaped by a lifetime of service, leadership, and personal experience in the United States military.
Brewer began his career in the United States Marine Corps during a time when the nation was deeply involved in the Vietnam War. Over the course of twenty-seven years of dedicated service, he built a career defined by discipline, resilience, and leadership. His time in the Marine Corps exposed him to the realities of military life—from the pressures of combat service to the responsibility of preparing young men for the demands of war.
One of the most defining chapters of his career came during his two tours as a Drill Instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California. In that role, Brewer was responsible for training and shaping new recruits as they went through the intense and demanding process of becoming United States Marines. From the early morning call of reveille to the final moments before graduation, Brewer played a direct role in transforming civilians into disciplined Marines ready to serve their country.
Throughout his military career, Brewer pursued professional development through numerous military schools and leadership programs. Among these accomplishments was his graduation from the U.S. Army’s Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas, one of the most respected leadership institutions for senior enlisted personnel. These experiences strengthened his leadership abilities and expanded his understanding of the responsibilities carried by those entrusted with guiding others in military service.
Brewer retired from the Marine Corps in August 1988 with the rank of First Sergeant after nearly three decades of service. Even after concluding his military career, his commitment to public service continued. Following his retirement from the Marines, Brewer began working for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, where he served until his second retirement in 2002.
In the years that followed, Brewer turned to writing as a way to preserve the stories and experiences that shaped his life in uniform. Drawing from his personal memories, observations, and leadership experiences, his writing explores the human side of military servicefocusing not only on the discipline and strength required of Marines, but also on the emotional challenges that often follow those who have experienced war.
Among his published works is “Chronicles of a Marine Rifleman: Vietnam, 1965–1966,” a memoir based on his experiences during the early stages of the Vietnam War. The book follows the journey of a Marine rifle squad as they prepare for deployment and face the harsh realities of jungle warfare near Da Nang and other regions of Vietnam. Through vivid storytelling, Brewer captures the challenges of combat, the discipline required of Marines, and the powerful brotherhood formed among those who serve together.
He is also the author of “Marine Recruit: Tears in the Sand,” a powerful story inspired by his experiences as a Marine Drill Instructor. The narrative explores the emotional and psychological struggles faced by a combat Marine tasked with training young recruits while confronting the lingering memories of war. Through his writing, Brewer seeks to honor the men and women who served in the armed forces and to provide readers with a genuine look into the culture,

sacrifices that define the United States Marine Corps. His stories reflect not only the strength required to serve but also the human experiences behind the uniform.
Today, Herb Brewer resides in Oklahoma, where he enjoys spending time outdoors, fishing, appreciating nature, and continuing to share stories that honor the spirit, tradition, and enduring legacy of the Marine Corps.
